England vs Australia Prediction & Betting Tips - International Friendlies
by Devesh Jaganath | in Football Predictions
England and Australia meet in an international friendly at Wembley on Friday evening. The hosts are ranked fourth in the world in the latest FIFA rankings with their opponents in 27th place. This may only be a friendly but both countries have important games on the horizon. For the Three Lions, there's still qualificaton for the European Championships (which they'll be co-hosting in 2028) with a vital game against Italy at Wembley next week. For Australia, next month sees them begin their 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Both England and Australia may decide to select some fringe players for this friendly but strong line-ups will be fielded and this should be an entertaining fixture and hopefully we can concentrate on what happens on the pitch not off it.

England - Australia: Form Analysis
England have been in very good form of late. They come into this match following a 3-1 win over Scotland last month, which extended their unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions. Their last loss came against France at the World Cup. The Three Lions currently lead Group C in the European Championship qualifiers with 13 points. They are six clear of Italy (who have a game in hand on them), Ukraine and North Macedonia, who all have seven points each. In addition, England have been in good goal-scoring form of late, with 17 in just their last five games. They are always strong at home and last lost at Wembley over 90 minutes to Hungary in the Nations League. Gareth Southgate's men have that big game against Italy next week but will want to get a good win under their belt in this match. England v Australia isn't quite the same in football as it is in cricket and rugby but neither side wants to lose to the other.
In contrast, Australia have been fairly poor in recent times. After bowing out of the World Cup in the Round of 16, they have won only one of their last four matches. That win came over Ecuador back in March. Australia’s last match was a 2-2 draw against Mexico. That wasn't as good a result as it sounds as they led that match 2-0 in the second half but the Socceroos conceded two late goals to ruin their chances of a morale-boosting win. After this match they take on New Zealand in another friendly before beginning their World Cup campaign. There are concerns over their defensive abilities. Four of the last five games that they have played have seen them concede at least a couple of goals. Only once have they beaten England in the seven previous games that they have played against the Three Lions. That sole win came 20 years ago in a match played at Wembley. There's only been one game since then with England winning 2-1 at home seven years ago but that was played at Sunderland's Stadium of Light stadium not Wembley. Marcus Rashford scored the opening goal in that match.

England & Australia Squad Analysis
England will be without the services of Bukayo Saka, who pulled out of the international squad on Monday morning. Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is also a doubt. Despite Saka’s absence, Southgate has not called up a replacement. Additional injury absentees include Ben Chilwell, Luke Shaw, Reece James, Callum Wilson, Eberechi Eze and Tyrone Mings. It's likely that in-form Ollie Watkins may start this game or at least come on as a substitute at some point.
For Australia, Middlesbrough midfielder Riley McGree has been ruled out with a foot injury. Bailey Wright, Jamie MacLaren and Mathew Leckie are also struggling for fitness and have not travelled with the team. Tom Glover and Lewis Miller will be hoping to make the debuts in this match.

Nevertheless, they still have more than enough depth, and we feel this will be an open match with plenty of chances created. Therefore, our England vs Australia prediction is for over 2.5 goals to be scored.
