Qualifier Maria Timofeeva is through to the second round at Wimbledon where she will face off with 25th seed Elise Mertens. Timofeeva comes here on four straight wins and has our backing in this prediction. 

This will mark the two players’ first career meeting and the winner will face Caty McNally or Elena Rybakina next. Mertens saw off the challenge of Laura Siegemund in the first round. 

She won in straight sets to make it eight straight appearances without an opening-round loss at Wimbledon. The Belgian is defending 240 points won last season as she earned a fourth-round finish at SW19. Mertens is, however, down one place to 28th in the live ranking.

Maria Timofeeva has been in impeccable form on her Wimbledon main draw debut and will hope to cause an upset here. The Uzbek star has won four matches on the bounce, with three being by straight sets. 

Timofeeva defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia 2-0 in the first round. Before this week, Timofeeva had never won a match on grass and had lost twice in the qualifying rounds at SW19. 

After the win over Haddad Maia, the 22-year-old has catapulted a massive 22 places in the live ranking. She is now 73rd in the world, which is a new career high for her.
