Nineteenth seed Elina Svitolina and unseeded Viktoriya Tomova will square off in the second round at the Australian Open. The winner will then set up a third-round showdown with either Viktorija Golubic or Katerina Siniakova. Elina Svitolina is back in Melbourne after missing last year’s tournament. She defeated the wildcard Taylah Preston in straight sets in the first round. The win continued her excellent run of never losing a first-round match here in 10 years. Svitolina, who is a two-time Australian Open quarterfinalist, has qualified for at least the third round in six successive appearances here. The 29-year-old has had a strong start to the year and has won five of the six matches she has contested. She finished as runner-up in Auckland in her first outing of the season. Svitolina, who is now up to 21st in the live ranking, has won both times against Tomova.

Viktoriya Tomova has advanced to the second round here for the first time in her career. This is her eighth appearance at the Australian Open and fourth in the main draw. She defeated Kayla Day in straight sets to achieve this feat. It was the second time this season that the two have faced off. Tomova also won the first encounter in the qualifying rounds at Hobart. The Bulgarian has had a rocky start to the year and so far has compiled a 4-3 record. Advancing to this round has propelled her up 10 places in the live ranking. She is now ranked 60th which is a new career high.
