It took Serena Williams just 44 minutes to win her US Open quarter final with the loss of only one game. Wang Qiang had no answer to Williams at all but she faces a much tougher match up against Elina Svitolina. Williams has won this title on six previous occasions, one in the last century (1999). The last win though was five years ago and the American hasn't won a Grand Slam title since returning to the circuit after giving birth to a baby girl.  Making the semi-final here is the 10th time in a row that Williams has made it to the last four at Flushing Meadow. The good news for the 37-year-old is that physically she felt great. That's not always been the case this year with a number of retirements.

Elina Svitolina is the fifth seed and has reached her second successive Grand Slam semi-final. Before Wimbledon she had never got that far in a Grand Slam event and at the US Open, this is her first time past the fourth round.  Away from the Grand Slam events it's not been the greatest of years for Svitolina. Even though this is her second Grand Slam semi-final of the year, her win over 10th seed Madison Keys was her first win over a top ten ranked player this year. Svitolina has been in good form in this championship with wins over Keys and Konta. She hasn't dropped a set so far and is going for the double after beating Venus Williams in the second round. This is a difficult one to call and if it does go to three sets, then the fitness or otherwise of Serena Williams may come into play. Go for over 2.5 sets to be played in this match.
