Elina Svitolina came into this tournament with a tough draw. The fifth seed had to get past Venus Williams in the second round and beat her in straight sets. Up next was 32nd seed Dayana Yastremska and that match was won for the loss of only two games. The last sixteen saw Svitolina up against recent Cincinnati Masters winner and tenth seed Madison Keys who had reached the final and semi-final of this tournament in the past two years. Again, Svitolina won through in straight sets to reach her first quarter final at Flushing Meadow. Now she bids to make it two Grand Slam semi-finals in a row after making it to the last four at Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Johanna Konta has been steadily rising back up the world rankings this year. She's currently 16th but in the live rankings is up to ninth in the world. Konta had to go to three sets to get past Daria Kasatkina in the first round but then only dropped six games in the next two rounds. That included beating 33rd seed Zhang Shuai in round three. The last sixteen saw her up against third seed Karolina Pliskova and the British player came from a set down to win that match. Konta reached the semi-final at the French Open and the last eight at Wimbledon. Svitolina has never lost to Konta in four previous matches and looks to be in better form than her opponent.
