Elina Avanesyan was granted a reprieve to play in the main draw when she was chosen as a lucky loser. Now playing under the Armenian flag, the Russian-born player lost her last qualifying match to Harriet Dart.

That was her second loss in the last three matches. Avanesyan, who has compiled a 23-17 record alternating between the tour and challenger circuits, finished as runner-up in Iasi before arriving in Cincinnati. The 21-year-old has started a new week placed 60th in the live ranking.

Bianca Andreescu has had a shaky start to the tour after a lengthy time away due to injury. The Canadian had been out for 10 months before she made her 2024 season debut at the French Open. She has played 15 matches thus far, winning nine times.

In her most recent outings, she found the going extremely tough and has lost five times in eight matches. The former US Open champion is currently on a two-match skid. She lost in the second round at the Olympic Games and the first round in Toronto.

Her early exit in Toronto was a big disappointment as she is a former Rogers Cup champion. Andreescu, who last played in Cincinnati in 2021, will be looking to make amends here. The former world number four is currently placed outside the WTA top 160 places.
