Fourth seed Elena Rybakina begins her Stuttgart campaign with a second-round showdown against the unseeded Veronika Kudermetova. Rybakina has never advanced past the second round in this event in the two times she has participated. The Kazakh is now in her third successive edition and will hope she again doesn’t suffer an early exit. Her dominance this year as well as in this fixture with Kudermetova will add to pumping up her confidence levels. Rybakina, who has defeated Kudermetova in the three times they have met, has been one of the form players in the WTA. The current world number four has compiled an impressive 22-4 record. This has led to two titles in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi as well as two runner-up finishes in Doha and Miami. The 24-year-old, who is making her season debut on clay, was last on the court slightly over two weeks ago in Miami.

Veronika Kudermetova has already taken to the court on clay this year and has looked strong. The Russian, who has struggled all season, will hope to have gained enough momentum for a win here. Kudermetova has lost more matches this season than she has won. She has compiled a 7-9 record but on clay, has won three of four fixtures. One of those was a three-set victory over Barbora Krejcikova in the first round here. The 26-year-old dug deep to come from a set down to win and avoid a first-round exit like last season. Kudermetova has been defeated in the second round in three of the nine tournaments she has competed in this season. The current world number 19’s highlight of the season came on clay as she made the quarterfinals in Charleston.  The winner here will play Ons Jabeur or Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals.
