Ekaterina Alexandrova is the third seed in the hard court Korea Open. Having beaten Mai Hontana in round one, she now takes on Yaniina Wickmayer for a place in the last eight of this tournament. The successful player will face either Polina Kudermetova or Kathinka Von Diechmann, both of whom are unseeded. Alexandrova is ranked 22nd in the world and up a place in the live list. The Russian is 19th in the Live WTA Race but can't qualify for the Tour Finals. Alexandrova recently reached the last eight in Tokyo but her last tournament produced a defeat against Cori Gauff. One title has been won this year by the 28-year-old, that was on grass in the Netherlands. The final of the hard court event held in Cleveland was also reached.

Yanina Wickmayer is down at 83rd in the latest rankings list. It's 13 years since the Belgian was ranked 12th in the world. Now aged 33 years old, Wickmayer began 2023 in 323rd position and injuries have blighted her career. Notable performances this year have mainly been on the ITF circuit with two finals reached on hard courts and two titles, one on grass, the other on clay. Her best recent hard court performance was getting to the last four of the Warsaw Open (losing to Iga Swiatek) but no top 100 players were beaten. Only one top 100 ranked opponent has been beaten by her this year. In the first round, Wickmayer defeated qualifier Llang en-shou in straight sets. This is far tougher and we go for Alexandrova to win without dropping a set.
