Ekaterina Alexandrova will take on fellow unseeded player Xinyu Wang in the Wuhan Open quarter-finals. The Friday match will be their third career meeting and below is our prediction.

Alexandrova was dominant in the third round against qualifier Hailey Baptiste. She won by the loss of just two games and what a way to record her first 2-0 win of the tournament.

Now she will seek another win against Wang to advance to yet another tour semi this season. The Russian defeated Wang the last time they met, in the quarter-finals in Cleveland last year.

Alexandrova, who has played in five semi-finals this season, would go on to reach the final in Cleveland. She will hope another win sets up a similar effect.

Advancing to this round has improved Alexandrova’s record to 26-23 and bumped her six places to 27th in the live ranking.

Xinyu Wang is coming off a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over second seed Jessica Pegula. Defeating a WTA top-five player and one of the in-form players this season will add to the Chinese star’s confidence.

Wang has won two of her three matches in Wuhan in straight sets. Another win here will see her progress to her second semi-final of the year. The Chinese number two has moved up to 45th in the live ranking and improved her record to 30-23.

Wang has also previously claimed a win in this fixture. She defeated Alexandrova in straight sets at Indian Wells last season. The winner from this match will play Jasmine Paolini, Qinwen Zheng or Leylah Fernandez for a place in the final.
