The 39-21-3 Edmonton Oilers will welcome the 30-24-9 Washington Capitals to Rogers Place early on Thursday morning. The two teams have both shut out the ailing Pittsburgh Penguins in the last week, the Oilers 4-0 in their most recent games and the Capitals 6-0, both in Pittsburgh. They picked up four points from a four-game road trip, arriving home for the same amount of games. Things have been a bit streaky for them here, winning eight straight, losing three on the bounce and most recently winning another three games at home ahead of this one. The goals have been lacking for their star Connor McDavid this season but he is 10 assists off tying his career high from last year, with 19 games still to play. He needs 47 points to make it to 1,000 for his career and if he can do it in the next 25 games, he will be the 3rd quickest ever to hit that mark.
Washington has been inconsistent on the road in the last month. They played some great hockey when shutting out the Boston Bruins 3-0 and a 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, but they got beaten 3-8 in Detroit against the Red Wings and shut out 0-3 at Winnipeg last time out. It is tough to know which Capitals will turn up on this occasion but their games against a more free flowing team have certainly been entertaining from a goals point of view. The Winnipeg game was just the second in their last 12 that they have failed to tally a power play goal, 13/38 overall in that time, a 34% conversion rate.
