DR Congo - Zambia: Form Analysis
Congo will be hoping to return to the type of form they showed in their glory days between the 1960s and 1980s when they were considered one of the best footballing nations in the continent. Since 2000, they have slipped off the radar and suffered three group-stage exits while also failing to qualify for the tournament three consecutive times between 2008 and 2012. Nevertheless, they booked their place in this year’s competition by topping their group in qualifying, earning 12 points in their six matches and holding off Mauritania, Gabon and Sudan. However, in the lead-up to the competition, their form has taken a dip, and they enter this match having failed to win any of their last three matches, losing to Sudan (1-0) and Burkina Faso (2-1), while they played out a 0-0 draw to Angola last week. Still, the DRC are ranked 13th among African nations, which is the second highest of the four teams in this group behind Morocco.
Meanwhile, the last time that Zambia emerged victorious in an AFCON match marked a significant achievement as they went on to clinch the trophy in February 2012. However, since then, it has been a bit of a nightmare for Chipolopolo, who exited the tournament in the group stages the next two times and failed to qualify altogether for the three editions thereafter. Nevertheless, with former Chelsea boss Avram Grant at the helm, the side is looking for a good run this year since last featuring in the competition back in 2015. Zambia have been in good form over the last year, highlighted by their COSAFA Cup triumph, where they beat Lesotho 1-0 in the final. Since then, they have played six matches, splitting them with two wins, two draws, and two losses. Zambia have never lost to this opponent in five previous meetings, though they have only won once, while the remaining four matches ended level.

DR Congo & Zambia Squad Analysis
Congo were dealt a major blow just a couple of weeks before the start of this competition, with Watford midfielder Edo Kayembe withdrawing from the squad due to an injury he sustained in The Hornets' 3-3 draw against Plymouth on New Year’s Day. Dylan Batubinsika will be forced to sit out this match, having received two yellows in the team’s final qualifying match. Galatasaray’s Cedric Bakambu and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa are expected to lead the line for Sebastien Desabre’s side.
Frankie Musonda will be available for selection for this match following an injury scare with his club Ayr United, that threatened to see him miss the competition. Chipolopolo have no other notable injury concerns. After winning the 2017 Under-20 AFCON, Leicester City’s Patson Daka and Fashion Sakala will try to emulate that performance in their first-ever AFCON for the senior side, especially now that Enock Mwepu is no longer a part of the side.

Our DR Congo vs Zambia Prediction
This could be a crucial match between two sides that have been tipped to battle for second place in the group behind Morocco. Zambia have the form advantage heading into this match and will also have the services of Patson Daka and Fashion Sakala at the top end of the pitch. This match really could go either way, but we expect Chipolopolo to find the back of the net at least once. Our DR Congo vs Zambia prediction: Zambia Over 0.5.
