Seventh seed Donna Vekic will begin her San Diego Open campaign with a first-round showdown against wildcard Katherine Hui. Katherine Hui is making her first appearance of the season in this match. It is also her first-ever match in the main draw of a WTA tour event. The 19-year-old has predominantly competed in the ITF circuit in her career. She last took to the court last November in the ITF in Charleston. Hui won the US Open Juniors tournament last year and won all six matches she played at the event without dropping a set. The American, who is ranked outside the WTA top 800 favours hard courts more than any other surface.

Donna Vekic made the final in San Diego two seasons ago. It was her debut tournament and she has played here since. She will hope for another deep run in the competition and will be confident of a winning start. The Croat has won six of the 10 matches she has played so far this season and four of those have come on hard courts. The highlight of her season however came on an indoor hard court in Linz where she produced a semifinal finish. Vekic is coming off a third-round exit in Dubai. In that WTA 1000 event, she defeated world number two Aryna Sabalenka. Her first win against a top-10 player this season. The former world number 19 started the week ranked 28th in the world. The winner here will play either Marina Melnikova or Marina Stakusic next.
