Unseeded Dominik Koepfer takes on wild card Andrea Vavassori in round one of the Italian Open. For the winner of this match the opponent in round two will be the 22nd seed Frances Tiafoe. This is an outdoor clay court tournament with lots of ranking points on the line as it's a Masters 1000 event. Koepfer was ranked 52nd in the latest rankings published on Monday. The pressure is on him though as the German is down to 75th in the iive list. That's because he's due to drop the pointe earned when winning a clay court challenger tournament held in Turin last May. Koeper hasn't had a great season so far on clay and not made it past the last 32 in the four tournaments he's played. Before that he'd made it to the last 16 in the Miami hard court tournament. He has had success on clay in the past though and reached the last eight in Rome on his only previous appearance here.

Andrea Vavassori is down at 168th in the latest rankings. The Italian receieved a wild card to play in his home Masters tournament. Earlier this year he got to the last eight of a clay court tournament held in Buenos Aires but lost to Carlos Alcaraz. It's not gone well for him since then as he failed to get through the qualifying rounds in both Santiago and Madrid and lost in the last 32 in Barcelona. He's making his second appearance in this tournament but lost in round one in 2023. We tip Koepfer to win this match.
