Eighth seed Maria Sakkari and the unseeded Diana Shanider will meet in the second round at Indian Wells. The winner of this second-ever meeting between the two will square off next with either Caroline Garcia or Viktoriya Tomova. Diana Shnaider is having quite the season. The Russian has won eight of 12 matches and has one title wrapped up already. Shnaider triumphed in Hua Hin for her first career tour title. She is making her debut in this WTA 1000 tournament and began things off with a three-set victory over Ana Bogdan. The 19-year-old has now moved up seven places to 67th in the live ranking.
Maria Sakkari defeated Shnaider last season in Melbourne in their only encounter to date. Coupling this with her recent successes in this tournament, the Greek number one will be confident of making a winning start. Sakkari has made at least the semifinals in Coachella in her last two appearances. She finished as runner-up in 2022 and then was amongst the last four last season. A former WTA 1000 champion, Sakkari is having a slow season and has so far compiled a 5-4 record. All nine matches have been played on hard courts. The 28-year-old has dropped to 10th in the live ranking.
