12th seed Diana Shnaider begins her Mutua Madrid Open campaign. Her opponent in round two of this outdoor clay court tournament is unseeded Katie Volynets. Here's our match prediction.

Shnaider received a bye into the second round. This is her third clay court tournament of the year and the Russian has a 2-2 record. Her most recent event was in Stuttgart where Shnaider was beaten by Elise Mertens in round three.

The 21-year-old is 13th in the rankings and 21st in the WTA Live Race. On clay, Shnaider won one WTA title last year and six others on lower tours. This is her second match against Volynets. The only previous match was played in 2022 with Shnaider winning but that was on a hard court.

Katie Volynets is up to 80th in the live rankings after beating Petra Kvitova in round one. The American only lost four games, all in the first set. Volynets has won six of her eight matches played on clay this year.

The weekend saw her lose in the final of the ITF clay court tournament held in Oeiras. Volynets was beaten in three sets by Dalma Galfi who is ranked outside the top 100. We tip Shnaider to win this match.
