Dayana Yastremska will play wildcard Talia Gibson as she makes her return to the Brisbane International to start her 2026 campaign. This is their first career meeting, and the winner will face off with 13th seed Leylah Fernandez in the second round. Read on for our prediction of the match.

Dayana Yastremska has never had the best of times when starting a season in Brisbane. In her last three appearances here, she has won just one match. She will hope that this isn’t the case as she looks to start the season better than she ended the last campaign.

Yastremska won just three of her final 10 fixtures in 2025. Finishing the season ranked 27th in the world, the Ukrainian produced runners-up finishes in Linz and Nottingham.

Talia Gibson had a far better end to 2025 than Yastremska, even though she competed largely outside the tour. The Australian won eight of her final nine fixtures, winning the title at the W75 event in Sydney and making the semi-final of a similar event in Playford.

In total, the 21-year-old won three ITF crowns and finished the year 122nd in the world, her best-ever year-end placing.

Gibson claimed 45 wins in 2025 and earned her first two tour-level victories when she won in the opening round at Melbourne and Cleveland.
