Daria Kasatkina, seventh seed, and the qualifier Ashly Krueger will square off in the second round at the Abu Dhabi Open. The winner of this first-ever meeting between the two will play either Maria Sakkari or Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals. Daria Kasatkina is having a strong start to the year and so far has won six of nine matches. She defeated the qualifier Diane Parry in the first round and is now one win away from another quarterfinal appearance here. In her second Abu Dhabi appearance, Kasatkina made the quarterfinals last season to mark her best-ever finish here. The Russian has made at least the last eight in two of the three tournaments she has so far competed in this year. In Adelaide, she went all the way to the final. She is currently ranked 14th in the WTA.

Ashly Krueger will hope the momentum she is on continues to propel her deeper in this WTA 500 tournament. The American had won just one match before arriving to make her Abu Dhabi debut. She now has her record tied at 4-4. Krueger, who started things off here in the qualifying rounds, defeated compatriot Bernarda Pera in three sets in the first round. Despite her strong showing here, Krueger has dropped in the WTA rankings. She is now down two places to 82nd place in the live ranking.
