Second seed Grigor Dimitrov will next, at the Brisbane International tournament, square off with unseeded Daniel Altmaier. The two will battle in the second round with the winner playing Tomas Machac or Rinky Hijikata in the quarterfinals. Despite winning in straight sets, Daniel Altmaier had a difficult tournament opener against the qualifier Li Tu. Both sets required tiebreakers and the match lasted two hours. The win did however end a two-match losing run and should have him arrive confident of causing an upset here. Altmaier is ranked 56th in the ATP and had a rocky season last year. He compiled a 32-31 record and lost 13 times in 21 outings on hard courts. The German is making his debut in Brisbane.
Grigor Dimitrov is a former Brisbane champion. He has also in four of his previous seven appearances here made at least the semifinals. The current world number 14, defeated Andy Murray, another former Brisbane champion, in three sets in the first round. He has now won seven of his last 10 fixtures. The eight-time tour champion had one of his best seasons as a professional last season. He won at least 40 matches for the first time since 2017 and ended his five-year wait for a tour final appearance. The Bulgarian contested two finals last year with one of those coming at the Paris Masters.
