World number 44 Alexei Popyrin will aim to build on the good week he had in Monte Carlo last week. The Australian faces fellow unseeded player Daniel Altmaier in round one of the outdoor clay court Barcelona Open. In round two, the winner of this match will be up against the 16th seed Arthur Fils. Popyrin reached the last 16 in Monte Carlo and beat defending champion Andrey Rublev in the second round. The 24-year-old previously made it to the last four of the hard court tournament played in Doha. Last year he got to the final of the ATP clay court Croatia Open, losing in three sets to Stan Wawrinka. He'll be hoping to continue his good form until Roland Garros and end a run of four consecutive first round losses.
Daniel Altmaier has had one previous match against Alexei Popyrin. That was in Cincinnati last year and he lost in three sets but that was a hard court match. The German is ranked 66th and has a career high of 47th achieved in 2023. He played on the South American clay court tour this year but lost both of his matches. In recent weeks, he lost in round one in Marrakech and then managed to qualify for the main draw in Estoril but lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the first round. We tip Popyrin to continue his good form and win this match.
