World number 119 Thiago Monteiro will take on qualifier Chun Hsin Tseng in round three of the Genoa Challenger event on Friday. The winner of this match will face either Zsombor Piros or Fabio Fognini in the next round. Monteiro comes into this match following a relatively straightforward win over Lorenzo Rottoli in the last round. The Brazilian seems to be finding his rhythm again after a difficult lead-up to this competition. He was knocked out in the first round of the Como Challenger and lost his opening qualifier at the US Open. Both matches were lost to lower-ranked opponents. Monteiro’s previous best performance this season came in Santiago at the start of the year, where he reached the third round. His record is now 20-26 for the year and 17-18 on the clay, which is his favoured surface. While Monteiro has slipped outside the top 100 this season, he is still the favourite to win this match.

 Meanwhile, Chun Hsin Tseng has already played four matches in this competition. The Taiwanese beat Mircea Alexandru Jecan and Luca Castagnola in qualifying in straight sets and then saw off Federico Iannaccone in the first round. However, he managed arguably his biggest best win of the year in the last round, overcoming Alexander Shevchenko in three sets. Tseng came back from a set down to win that match. Shevchenko was the number one seed in this competition, and it marked Tseng’s first win over a top-100-ranked player this year. The 22-year-old is now 16-22 for the year and 11-14 on the surface. He would have got a huge confidence boost from the last match but it will be interesting to see if he can maintain the same intensity having already played four matches in the tournament.
