The WTA UniCredit Iasi Open continues with an intriguing line-up of quarter-finals. In one match, in-form French star Chloe Paquet takes on Selena Janicijevic for a place in the semi-finals. It promises to be a Gallic battle of experience versus youth as the 30-year-old Paquet takes on her in-form compatriot in a game for which it is not easy to make a convincing prediction.
Part of the reason is that the data is similar for both players. Paquet had a good run to the quarter-finals in Palermo last week and has followed that by reaching the same stage in Iasi. She has won four of her last five matches, all on clay, and was a finalist in Saint-Malo earlier in the year on the same surface. It is also worth noting that Paquet beat both 32nd seed Katerina Siniakova and the in-form Diana Shnaider at Roland Garros back in May, only losing to fifth seed Marketa Vondrousova in the third round.
Paquet defeated seventh-seed Maria Lourdes Carle in the first round in Iasi, 6-4, 6-2, and then wrapped up another straight-sets win in the second round over Swiss qualifier Simona Waltert, winning 6-1, 7-5. She has never faced Selena Janicijevic, so this will be a first-time matchup for both players.
Her opponent Janicijevic has been in outstanding form herself of late. She has won seven of her last eight matches, including reaching the semi-final of the Contrexeville 125 a fortnight ago, where she lost in the semi-final to third seed Mayar Sherif. Ranked 188th in the world, she had to come through qualifying in this event beating Irene Burillo Escorihuela and Julia Avdeeva to reach the first round.
There, she downed another qualifier, Gergana Topalova from Bulgaria, 6-1, 6-2 and then followed that up with a 6-2, 7-6 win over wildcard entrant Miriam Bianca Bulgaru.
The quarter-final winner between fifth-seed Elina Avanesyan and third-seed Jaqueline Cristian will await the winner of this tie in Thursday's semi-final.
