Chelsea and Newcastle United will turn their sights to the League Cup where the former will host the this quarterfinal showdown. Chelsea defeated Blackburn to advance to this round while Newcastle outdueled Manchester United. Chelsea have won seven straight League Cup matches at Stamford Bridge and will therefore be confident of advancing to the semifinals. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are coming off a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League that ended a two-game losing run. The win also extended their current unbeaten stretch at home to four games with three of those matches ending in victory. Since Chelsea have only played domestic football this season, chances are that Pochettino will not tinker with his squad as much here. This will be the second time they are playing against Premier League opposition in the tournament. The Blues defeated Brighton in Round 2.

Newcastle United are also coming off a victory this past weekend. Eddie Howe’s men ended a three-game skid with a convincing 3-0 win against Fulham in the league. Having eliminated both Manchester clubs in their surge to this round, the Magpies will be more than a challenge for Chelsea. They also did thump their soon-to-be hosts 4-1 in their league meeting in November. Newcastle have however not won at Stamford Bridge since 2012 and have lost 10 of the 11 matches since this period. The visitors made the final of last season’s competition. They will seek to at the very least do so again to also get over their disappointing Champions League campaign. Newcastle have been blighted by injuries this season and Eddie Howe could use this opportunity to rest some of his first-team squad.
