Top seed Casper Ruud will meet with unseeded Arthur Fils on Friday at the 2023 Hamburg European Open. From this quarterfinal tie the winner will face fourth-seed Alexander Zverev or unseeded Luca Van Assche in the semifinals. Casper Ruud has looked a bit shaky in Hamburg, dropping a set in both of his matches. In the last round he had to come from behind to beat qualifier Cristian Garin. The ATP world number four has a 28-14 record in 2023, with most of his victories coming on clay. On clay, he has managed 22 wins in 29 outings. Ruud has won one title, while finishing as runner-up twice, most recently in Bastad. He is making his fifth appearance in Am Rothenbaum where his best-ever finish came in 2020 when he reached the semifinals.

Arthur Fils is doing well this season. Ahead of this season, he had never won a tour match let alone a title. He however shocked many by winning the Lyon Open as a wildcard, and defeating a top seed along the way. The Frenchman will hope for the same feat here. Before winning in Lyon, he had played two challenger finals and won one. His form on clay has been a big part of his success this season. Of his 30 victories, 12 have come on the surface and it is only on indoor hard courts that he has won more. The 19-year-old is making his debut in Hamburg and has been in sublime form. He is yet to drop a set, and in the previous round, defeated Dusan Lajovic 7-5, 7-5. As a result of this, he has moved up 17 places to 54th in the live ranking which is a new career high.
