Caroline Garcia is making her Abu Dhabi debut. She is coming off a second-round exit from the Australian Open. The Frenchwoman lost in straight sets to Magdalena Frech. It was her third defeat in a strong start to the season. Garcia has won five of the eight matches she has played so far in 2024. The majority of these, three, came at the United Cup where France made it to the semifinals. Garcia had an inconsistent season last year which eventually led to her dropping out of the WTA top 10. She is currently ranked 20th in the live ranking. The 30-year-old is a strong performer on hard courts and has won over 200 matches on the surface in her career.

Sorana Cirstea is having a poor start to the season. The Romanian has lost all three matches she has played so far in 2024. She has started the season the same way she ended the last. Cirstea, who has now lost six successive fixtures, hasn’t won since September. But having won the last two meetings with Garcia, the 33-year-old will be confident of a win here. Both victories were achieved last season and both were on hard court. This allowed her to tie this series as two wins a piece. Cirstea, who is ranked 25th in the live ranking, was eliminated in the first round here last season. This was her debut tournament.
