Julie Niemeier takes on Camila Osorio in this hard court match with the winner facing either sixth seeded Mayar Sherif or Linda Novoska in the last eight. Niemeier began this tournament ranked 71st but is up to 66th in the live rankings, winning this match will see her rise another two places. The German will want to pile up the ranking points in the first half of the year. That's because she'll have a massive amount to defend when it comes to Wimbledon where the quarter-finals were reached last year. It's been a difficult start to the new year for the 24-year-old who arrived in Lyon without a singles win all year. Two matches were lost in the United Cup, though both were against top-25 ranked players. Niemeir hasn't had much luck with draws so far this year. The first qualifying round of the Adelaide International saw her lose to Karolina Pliskova and then in the Australian Open, she lost to top seed Iga Swiatek in round one. Finally this week she's got off the mark but had to go to three sets to defeat qualifier Olga Danilovic in the first round.

Camila Osorio started this week ranked just two places below her opponent. Winning this match will take her up to 66th and above Niemeier. The Colombian has only played the Australian Open this year. The first round saw her defeat Panna Uvardy in straight sets but then she had the same bad luck as Niemeier. Osorio also faced Iga Swiatek and only won five games in a straight sets loss. 2022 saw her reach the final of the WTA Tour event held in Monterrey in March. That form hasn't continued though and she failed to get past the second round of any Grand Slam. Osorio upset the home fans in the first round when beating third seeded Alize Cornet in three sets, winning the final one for the loss of just one game. This looks like being a tight match and Osorio can get a win.
