The next few weeks are going to be very important for Emma Raducanu. The Brit is back in America and getting ready to defend her US title. This week sees her seeded second in Washington and faces unseeded Camila Osorio in round two. Raducanu may be seeded second but she's the top seed left in the tournament after Jessica Pegula was beaten in the second round. Of the eight seeds, there are only three left at the time of writing. Raducanu began this week ranked 10th in the world but is up to a career high ninth in the live rankings. That's despite her having reached just one quarter final this year. That was in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix when she beat two players ranked outside the top 100, then lost to Iga Swiatek. Only three top 50 players have been beaten by Raducanu this year, the highest being in 46th place. Raducanu may well be in the top 10 now but a poor performance at the US Open will see her slide down the rankings. This week is her first tournament since losing in the second round at Wimbledon. The first round saw her defeat qualifier Louisa Chirico (ranked outside the top 200) in straight sets.

Her opponent is ranked 67th in the world and had lost her last five matches before heading to Washington. The Colombian reached a WTA 250 final in Monterrey in March losing to Leyah Fernandez, who of course Raducanu beat in the US Open final last year. The 20-year-old got back in winning ways with a straight sets win over Sofia Kenin. When betting on Raducanu there is always a worry over her fitness and she has retired from a match more than once this year. Raducanu seems to be fitter at present and can get a win here to set up a quarter final against either Liudmila Samsonova or Ajla Tomljanovic.
