Nikoloz Basilashvili had made a disappointing start to his 2026 clay court season. Four ATP Tour events had seen him fail to get past round, losing twice in the qualifying rounds. He struggled again in Rome and needed to come from behind to beat Elmer Moller in the final qualifying round.

Three sets have also been needed in his main draw wins over Daniel Merida Aguilar and fifth seed Bem Shelton. A side bet on a tie-break may be successful here. Basilashvili has played two so far with three recent matches all seeing two played.

Brandon Nakashima is the world number 32 and that's 85 places above his opponent. The American is in round three in Rome for the second successive year but has never gone any further here.

He beat Roberto Bautista Agut in round two. Four games were lost, all in the first set.
