A place in the Sud de Open France quarter finals is at stake as fourth seed Borna Coric takes on unseeded Pedro Martinez Portero. Coric is ranked 37th in the world but up a place in the live rankings. The Croatian received a bye into the second round of this indoor hard court tournament. He began the new year representing Croatia in the United Cup team event. He lost to Casper Ruud but got a win over Tallon Griekspoor. His Australian Open campaign was a poor one, losing in round one to 17th seed Frances Tiafoe in the first round. With time on his hands he entered the Challenger Tour event held in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve and lost in the final to Leandro Riedi.
Pedro Martinez Portero was ranked 99th at the start of this tournament. The Spaniard has climbed five places in the live rankings after beating Jaume Munar in the first round without dropping a set. He can rise to 90th if winning this match but that's still way below his career high of 40th achieved in 2022. The 26-year-old has also reached a Challenger Tour final this year. His was in Tenerife where he was beaten in the title decider by Brandon Nakashima. In the Australian Open, he lost to Francesco Passaro in the first qualifying round. He is far more comfortable on clay courts and our tip here is a win for Coric.
