Belinda Bencic is the 23rd seed for this tournament but caused a massive shock in the last round when beating world number one Naomi Osaka in straight sets. Bencic only dropped four games in that match and has only lost 15 games in three matches in this tournament. Her run to the quarter-finals comes after winning in Dubai last month. That tournament saw her beat four top ten players including three of the current top six.

Karolina Pliskova is seeded fifth at Indian Wells but struggled in the last round. She had to go to three sets to beat Annet Kontaveit and that was her second struggle in this tournament. The second round saw her lose the first set to Misaki Doi before winning the next two. Her year began with a win in a tournament in Brisbane and then lost to Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open semi-final. She hasn't built on that though and only reached the last eight in Dubai losing to world number 31 Su-Wei-Hsieh. Bencic has the momentum here and can get the win.
