The US Open has continued to spring surprises. Belinda Bencic caused the largest of them all when beating defending champion and number one seed Naomi Osaka in straight sets. The 13th seed is in her second US Open quarter final but there's been a five year wait to get this far again at Flushing Meadow. This is the only Grand Slam in which Bencic has made it past the fourth round. Three Grand Slam events this year have seen her depart at the third round stage. Bencic didn't even need to play in this year's third round as her opponent pulled out injured. Her best performance this year was winning a title in Dubai where she won four successive matches against top ten ranked players.

Donna Vekic is the 23rd seed and has only dropped one set on her way to this quarter final. That was in her last sixteen win over 26th seeded Julia Gorges. This is her first time past the fourth round in a Grand Slam event. She'd previously never made it past the third round at Flushing Meadow. Three previous meetings between these two players have Bencic 2-1 ahead. Both those wins came five years ago, the most recent was won by Vekic on clay. When Bencic hits form she is difficult to beat, go for her to win this match.
