A finalist who isn't among the top 12 seeds is guaranteed in this US Open. Belinda Bencic is seeded 13th and takes on Bianca Andreescu who is two places below her. Bencic is in her first ever Grand Slam semi-final (as is her opponent) and this is the only one of the four events where she has made the last eight. That quarter final appearance was in the 2014 US Open and this year has seen her lose in the third round of the other three Grand Slam tournaments. The Swiss player has beaten two seeds on her way to the semi-final with her largest scalp being that of world number one and defending champion Naomi Osaka in the last sixteen. The quarter finals saw her defeat 23rd seed Donna Vekic in straight sets. Only Alize Cornet in the second round has taken a set off her in this tournament.

Bianca Andreescu is only playing in her fourth main draw at a Grand Slam. The last two years have seen her lose in the first qualifying round of the Us Open and her best in a Grand Slam this year is the second round in both Australia and France. It's still been an incredible year for her though with a string of big wins over top ranked players. Andreescu won Indian Wells as a wild card and recently won the Canadian Open. In this tournament, Andreescu has beaten the 19th and 25th seeds to reach the semi-final. She's hard to beat when in top form and the tip is for her to win this match and make it to the final.
