Her best performance before this tournament was a semi-final in Doha and now she bids to reach her first final. She had two three-setters earlier in the week and had to come from behind to beat Natalia Vikhlyantseva. The quarter-final saw her beat Venus Williams in straight sets.

Belinda Bencic is the 23rd seed for this tournament but has already caused two big shocks in this tournament. The last 16 saw her defeat world number one Naomi Osaka for the loss of just four games. Her first three wins in this tournament saw her drop only 15 games but it was a tougher task for her in the quarter-finals. It took her three sets to get the better of fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova. Now she takes on Kerber as she continues her attempt to win her second tournament of the year, having already won in Dubai where she beat three of the world's current top six players. In the rankings based on 2019 results, Bencic is fourth and Kerber 16th, she seems to be on a roll this week and can get the win here to reach her second final of the year.
