Beatriz Haddad Maia has defeated Alexandrova in the three times they have been paired up against each other. Their most recent battle, played last year at the French Open, lasted nearly three hours with the Brazilian orchestrating a comeback. Though they have never battled on grass, Maia’s dominance in this fixture will have her confident of making a winning start here. Maia, a multiple tour-level grasscourt champion, is making her season debut on the surface. She was last on the court three weeks ago at the French Open where she suffered a disappointing first-round defeat. Maia, who has compiled a wobbly 15-15 record, starts the week as the WTA world number 18.

Ekaterina Alexandrova is also a multiple grasscourt tour champion. Her successes on the surface should have her confident of earning her first win in this fixture. The Russian is making her fourth appearance in this event. She has arrived to defend the 195 points she earned in her run to the semi-finals last year. Last year’s performance was Alexandrova’s best in Berlin. The 29-year-old is coming off a disappointing semi-final defeat in Hertogenbosch. This denied her the opportunity to defend her title for a third straight year. A finalist in Linz earlier this year and a semi-finalist in Miami, Alexandrova has had a topsy-turvy year. She has compiled a 16-15 record and has suffered most of her defeats inside the first two rounds of an event. Alexandrova starts this week ranked 20th in the WTA.
