Eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov has qualifier Terence Atmane standing between him and the Italian Open fourth round. The Bulgarian kicked off his campaign in this outdoor clay court tournament with a straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka. That took him into the third round of this Masters event for the second year in a row. His best performance in this tournament is the semi-final he reached ten years ago. He also got to the last eight in 2020. The Bulgarian is up to ninth in the live rankings and is also in that position in the ATP Race. So far in this year's European clay court swing, his best performance has been getting to the last 16 in Monte Carlo.

It's been a busy week for Terence Atmane but a successful one. He's 137th in the latest ranking list but up to a career-high 119th in the live list. The Frenchman has had to play four matches to reach this stage. In the qualifying rounds, he beat Thanasi Kokkinakis and fellow French player Harold Mayot but needed three sets to win his second match. That took him into a first round match against Christopher Eubanks and he won that in straight sets. He was a set and 1-0 up against 26th seeded Lorenzo Musetti when his opponent retired, Atmane hadn't won an ATP Tour main draw match this year before this tournament. He'd also lost four of his last five matches so this is a welcome return to form. His run ends here though and we tip Dimitrov to win in straight sets.
