The top two players in the world were expected to meet in the final of this tournament. Instead, world number one Ashleigh Barty takes on Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals. Barty won her round-robin group with two wins out of three. Her victories came against Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic but she had to go to three sets in the latter match. Her loss was to Kiki Bertens (who replacd the injured Naomi Osaka) in three sets. Barty is assured of the top ranking at the end of the year and recent peformances have seen her lose in the final in Beijing and reach the semi-final in Wuhan.

Karolina Pliskova finished second in her group. The world number two beat Simona Halep in three sets, defeated Bianca Andreescu (who retired after the first set) and lost in straight sets to Elina Svitolina. Pliskova won recently in Zhengzhou and has won three of her previous five matches against Barty. However, two of the last three have been won by the Australian. The tip here is for this match to have over 20.5 games played in it.
