World number 48 Yannick Hanfmann will take on 65th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech in the second round of the ATP Kitzbuhel Open on Wednesday. The winner of this match will face either Zhizhen Zhang or Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals. These players have met twice in the past and are currently 1-1. This will be Hanfmann’s first match after receiving a buy in round one. The German comes into this tournament following a disappointment at Hamburg, where he was knocked out in the second round by his possible opponent in the next round Zhizhen Zhang. Hanfmann reached the semi-final in Mallorca at the end of June but has struggled since then, failing to get past round two of the next three tournaments he has participated in. Earlier in the year, Hanfmann reached the semi-final in Houston and the quarter-final in Rome. His record now reads as 37-20 and 28-13 on the clay. The German is the favourite going into this match. 

Arthur Rinderknech, on the other hand, earned his first title of the year at the Zug Challenger event last week. In that tournament, he overcame Jurij Rodionov in the semi-final and Joris De Loore in the final, both in three sets. The Frenchman has had a mixed season to this point, dropping outside the top 80 in May and now back in the mid-60s. Rinderknech took on lucky loser Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the opening round of the contest and had to come from a set down after he was broken late in the set. With that, he is now 18-20 for the year and 9-5 on the clay. His previous win over this opponent was on the grass in 2021, while he lost to him on the clay in Bastad later that year. This is the first time he will play a higher-ranked player since June, and may struggle to progress.
