Kaia Kanepi is the sixth seed in the Washington Open but one of only three seeds remaining. The world number 37 (the same number as her age) takes on unseeded Anna Kalinskaya in the quarter finals. The winner will face either unseeded Daria Saville or qualifier Rebecca Marino for a place in the final. Kanepi is up to 31 in the live rankings after wins over Greet Minnen and Zhu Lin (after losing the first set). Kanepi is bidding to reach her second semi-final of the year. It's been a good 2022 though as Kanepi also made it to the last eight of the Australian Open.

Anna Kalinskaya began this week ranked 71st in the world but is up four places in the live rankings. The Russian had lost four of her last five matches before this tournament. Her last event was the European Open where she retired in her first match after winning just one match in the first set. Her best performance this year has been reaching the last four in Guadaljara. Kalinskaya lost to Sloane Stephens, again retiring, this time when the scores were level at one set each. This week has seen her beat Madison Brengle and third seeded Simona Halep (this time it was her opponent who retired). This is the first match between these two players, bet on Kanepi to win but it might take her three sets.
