Anhelina Kalinina and fellow unseeded player Karolina Pliskova meet yet again in 2023, this time in San Diego on Monday. The two will battle in the opening round with the winner advancing to play fourth seed Barbora Krejcikova next. Anhelina Kalinina has been defeated seven times in her last 10 fixtures. This form gives a sneak peek into her struggles this season. The Ukrainian has compiled a 20-20 record with the majority of her victories as well as defeats coming on hard court. She also has her record split down the middle on hard court with 11 defeats and 11 victories. Kalinina arrives to make her San Diego debut after her first-round elimination at the US Open two weeks ago. Despite her struggles this season, the 26-year-old did record a runner-up finish at the Italian Open. This was the first WTA 1000 final of her career and only her second tour final. She is currently ranked 28th in the live ranking.

Karolina Pliskova is down nine places to 34th in the live ranking. This is due to her woeful form recently where she has managed just three wins in her last 13 fixtures. The former US Open finalist was defeated in the second round in the recently concluded major in her last match. But as she has defeated Kalinina in both of their meetings, she will be confident of getting back to winning ways. Both fixtures with Kalinina have been on hard court with the latest coming earlier this year in Dubai. Pliskova has fared much better than Kalinina this year but has also had a rocky campaign. She has compiled a 21-17 record with 18 of her victories coming in 29 outings on hard court. The Czech number six is making her second appearance in San Diego. She was eliminated in the second round in her debut last season.
