Anhelina Kalinina and Anna Bondar, both unseeded, meet in the first round in Toronto. This is the third time this season that they are squaring off. Kalinina lost six times in her last 10 outings, and our prediction doesn’t favor her here.

Kalinina defeated Bondar in their most recent meeting. This was on clay in Rabat back in May. She would go on to finish as runner-up in the Moroccan capital. Kalinina will hope for much of the same as she seeks to end a recent dip in form.

The Russian has lost four times in her last six outings. Set to start the week as the WTA’s world number 56, Kalinina has compiled a 38-16 record and is coming off a quarter-final performance in Hamburg.

Bondar earned her first win in this fixture at the start of the year. The Hungarian beat Kalinina in straight sets in the qualifiers in Brisbane. She was unable to make it back-to-back victories in Rabat.

In her current form, she will fancy returning to winning ways here. Bondar is coming off a runner-up finish in Hamburg. Though a disappointing outcome as she lost in the final yet again in Germany, she will be pleased with her performance.

Bondar hadn’t won more than two matches in a row since a fourth-round finish in Madrid in April. A winner of 25 fixtures so far this season, Bondar will start a new week as the world No. 77.
