Fourth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and sixth seed Marta Kostyuk will battle in the quarterfinals at the San Diego Open. A semifinal showdown with either Jessica Pegula or Anna Blinkova will follow for the winner. This is the second time this season that Pavlyuchenkova and Kostyuk are squaring off. Pavlyuchenkova won their first encounter which was in Doha but it was rather fortuitous as Kostyuk was forced to retire. The Russian will be eager to confirm that she would have won with or without Kostyuk’s setback. She has been in fine form and has already played in two semifinals in Linz and Doha. The 32-year-old, who is now up to 23rd in the live ranking, has won 14 of 19 matches. Eleven of those wins have come on hard courts.

Marta Kostyuk has lost both quarterfinals she has contested this year. In fact, the Ukrainian has not gone past the quarters at a tour event since her title run in Austin last year. This is, therefore, no ordinary match for the 21-year-old. She will also want to prove that were it not for illness, she would have defeated Pavlyuchenkova in Doha. Kostyuk has had a strong start to the year despite not dominating in the main draw. She has won 10 of 14 matches which have all been played on hard courts. Kostyuk, who is making her third appearance in San Diego, defeated Taylah Preston in straight sets in the second round. Despite her rise to the last eight, Kostyuk has dropped six places to 40th in the live ranking due to losing 172 points.
