Qualifier Alexandre Muller and unseeded Taro Daniel will square off in the quarterfinals of the Auckland Open on Thursday. A semifinal showdown with either top seed Ben Shelton or the qualifier Roberto Carballes Baena will await the winner. Alexandre Muller is having quite the debut in Auckland. He started things off in the qualifying rounds and has won four matches, with three of those being by straight sets. The Frenchman has won both his main draw fixtures 2-0 with the last being against Francisco Cerundolo. He is now up five places to 74th in the live ranking which is a new career high placing.
Taro Daniel has also won four of the five matches he has contested this season. Two of his wins have come in Auckland where he is yet to drop a set. The Japanese number two is up four places to 70th in the live ranking. He has defeated crowd favourites in both his matches with eighth seed Max Purcell falling in the second round. Daniel played in only one quarterfinal at tour level last season. Equaling this feat this early in the campaign should be a big boost for him. Taro won 45 matches last season which is the most he has managed in a singular campaign in eight years.
