Alex Michelsen has returned to the tour after a more than a week’s break. The American closed out his grass campaign with a runners-up finish in Newport. He will hope the time spent to recover sees him sustain another title challenge.
The 19-year-old made his tour debut in 2024 and has taken his career to new heights this year. Though he has compiled an inconsistent 23-23 record, Michelsen recorded a first career top 10 win this year. He also broke through to the ATP top 60 and is currently placed 59th in the live ranking.
Mattia Bellucci was in splendid form in the past week and arrives for this match fully confident of a win. Though he has majorly competed outside the tour, Bellucci is currently having the best tour stretch of his season.
He has won 10 of his last 12 matches starting from the qualifying rounds in Wimbledon. The Italian had the highlight of his season in Atlanta where as a qualifier, he made it to the quarter-finals. Now he is just two wins away from doing the same in what is his DC debut.
The 23-year-old saw off the challenge of American Mackenzie McDonald, a former Washington finalist, in the first round. He won in straight sets to improve his record to 27-22. Bellucci’s recent form has moved him closer to breaking into the ATP top 100. He is currently 112th in the live ranking which is a new career high for him.

Our prediction for Alex Michelsen v Mattia Bellucci is for Michelsen to win in three sets. Bellucci has had a strong run in recent weeks and will be a tough nut to crack for Michelsen. The Italian, however, has often struggled at tour level and this year has won multiple matches at a tour event only once.
This isn’t the case for Michelsen who has competed predominantly in the tour and has earned most of his wins on hard courts. Having the full support of the home crowd should add to the American’s advantage.
