New World TV - A historic deal

New World TV

A landmark deal was struck between Togolese satellite TV group New World TV and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The result is New World having the free-to-air and all broadcast rights to CAF competitions from 2023 to 2025. It marks the biggest investment by a pan-African broadcaster in CAF history. The first event under the new deal: the 2024 African Cup of Nations.

So, what does this mean for the fans? Luckily it shouldn’t have that big of an impact on viewers who simply want to watch their nation compete in the tournament. Free-to-air stations in the 46 Sub-Saharan countries will simply have to go through New World to sublicense the rights. Below we’ll take a look at the situations of a few countries individually.

How to watch in Sub-Saharan Africa

Nigeria

Those tuning in from Nigeria will be looking to support their Super Eagles as they seek their first AFCON title in 10 years. Fans will likely be able to catch the action by heading over to SuperSport on DStv and GOtv. There could also be livestream opportunities available as DStv provides users with a dedicated app.  their Super Eagles along with every other competing team by tuning into SuperSport on DStv and GOtv. Subscribers to StarTimes could also have access to the 52 scheduled matches as they were active in broadcasting the African Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures.

Kenya

As for Kenya, the Harambee Stars will not be partaking in this iteration of the famous tournament. However, fans will likely still want to keep a keen eye on the competition considering their nation is co-hosting the event in 2027. While we appear to still be awaiting official confirmation on the schedule and the broadcast providers, both the KBC (Kenya Broadcasting Corporation) and K24 TV have a history of showing the tournament in the past and will be the most likely place to turn to.

South Africa

Similar to Nigeria, the best bet for fans of Bafana Bafana’s will be to tune into SuperSport on DStv and Canal+. As one of the biggest sports channels in the country, SuperSport has a history of broadcasting prior editions of the event. If you’re looking to live stream the African Cup of Nations matches, you’ll likely have success with the dedicated DStv app.

Other Sub-Saharan countries

Fans of the Black Stars of Ghana should look to ETV and GBC (specifically GTV Sports+) who have teamed up in the past to broadcast AFCON matches. For other countries such as Tanzania, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Zambia, be sure to keep a close eye on the main national broadcasting channels as it is likely they will be looking to sublicense the rights from New World TV.

It’s also a good idea to be aware of the CAF TV official YouTube channel, which will be covering the event. Whether that results in match highlights or potentially even live streams of the matches remains to be seen. However, there are murmurings of the latter which would certainly offer an incredibly convenient solution for those looking to watch on their phone or laptop!
