Europa League Specialist Unai Emery Eyes Another European Title
SC Freiburg and Aston Villa are set to meet tonight in the Europa League final, and fireworks are expected at the Turpas Arena in Istanbul, with both teams looking to etch their names in European football history. Check out our Freiburg vs Aston Villa prediction for all the key stats.
Freiburg have enjoyed a dream run in the UEL this season, and tonight marks the first time that they will feature in a major European final, but the odds are firmly stacked against the German outfit, who currently sit in seventh place in the Bundesliga this season.
Aston Villa ended the League Phase of the competition in second place with 21 points (W7 L1) and are the firm favourites in this clash. Indeed, victory tonight will see them bring an end to a 30-year wait for silverware since beating Leeds United in the 1996 EFL Cup.
Villa have their sights set on a first major European title in 44 years!
Arguably, the Villans' greatest advantage heading into this fixture is the experience of Unai Emery. Few managers in modern football have a stronger connection to the Europa League than the Spaniard, who is eyeing a fifth trophy in the competition tonight.
Emery first made his mark on the UEL with Sevilla, guiding the La Liga outfit to a record three consecutive titles between 2014 and 2016, before notching up his fourth triumph with Villareal in 2021, defeating Manchester United on penalties at the Stadion Gdansk in Poland.
Unai Emery: Europa League Final Record
| Season | Match | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2013-14 | Sevilla 0-0 Benfica (4-2 after penalties) | W |
| 2014-15 | Sevilla 3-2 Dnipro | W |
| 2015-16 | Sevilla 3-1 Liverpool | W |
| 2018-19 | Arsenal 1-4 Chelsea | L |
| 2020-21 | Villareal 1-1 Man United (11-10 after penalties) | W |
Only Giovanni Trapatonni (7) has featured in more European finals than Emery (6). If the 54-year-old Villa boss secures victory tonight, he will pull level with Carlo Ancelotti as the joint-most successful manager in major European club tournaments.
That experience could prove invaluable for the Premier League side in this clash. While most of the Lions’ players will be appearing in the biggest match of their careers, Emery is no stranger to the pressure and tactical demands that come with these high-profile European encounters.
Player Focus: Ollie Watkins vs Vincenzo Grifo

While most are expecting Aston Villa to dictate the tempo tonight, Freiburg cannot be overlooked, as they have proven they carry major attacking threat by scoring 25 goals in the Europa League this season - the fourth-most by a German club in the competition since 2009-10.
The spearhead of the Breisgau-Brasilianer’s attack is Vincenzo Grifo, who has been excellent this term, leading the UEL for goal involvements with nine, including five goals and four assists. He has recorded a direct goal contribution in each of his last five appearances in the competition.
Meanwhile, a key to stopping the Villans will be Johan Manzambi, who leads the UEL this term in possession won (72), and duels won (97). He has also earned the most fouls in the competition and has registered the second-most shots at goal (32).
OIlie Watkins is in fine form heading into the Europa League final!
As discussed in our Europa League predictions, Ollie Watkins is the undisputed danger man coming into tonight’s blockbuster. The England international bagged a brace and provided an assist in his side’s victory over Liverpool at the weekend, taking his tally for the season to 19 goals and five assists.
Watkins was instrumental in the Villans’ second-leg semi-final comeback over Nottingham Forest (1 goal and 1 assist), and he has now recorded an impressive seven goal contributions in his last six European matches, scoring five and setting up two.
Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia are also worth keeping an eye on this evening. Rogers has created the most chances (27) in the competition, while Buendia has scored three goals and provided five assists in 11 Europa League starts in 2025-26.
