Paris Saint-Germain is 90 minutes away from reaching a historic milestone 

The UEFA Super Cup crown currently belongs to Paris Saint-Germain, which claimed the prestigious honor in the 2024-25 season after edging Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The Parisians are out to defend that title by facing another English opposition, this time around, an Aston Villa outfit. Luis Enrique's men are familiar with this Birmingham side, having gone toe-to-toe in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League quarter-final, triumphing 5-4 on aggregate.

After the 5-4 aggregate triumph over Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final, PSG went all the way to lift their very first-ever trophy in this competition.

Another telling statistic to keep in mind that could be a much-needed shot of confidence for Paris Saint-Germain is their record against English opposition in European competitions. They are unbeaten in their last ten matches, recording nine wins and a solitary draw. 

For a side that has preferred stability over a major squad overhaul ahead of the 2026-27 season, bringing in Maghnes Akliouche (Monaco) and Lucas Digne (Aston Villa), surely that record should count for something here. 

This is more than just a match for Luis Enrique's men, but an opportunity to further instill their authority and underline their dominance on the European stage. Success here could see them become the fourth team to retain the UEFA Super Cup, with the last club to do so being Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017.

This is their third appearance in the Super Cup after defeating Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League through penalties to retain their crown.

This was more than just a historic first in this competition; it was Villa’s first piece of European silverware since their famous European Cup victory in 1982.

Unai Emery's charges should not be mistaken for newbies in the UEFA Super Cup. Their last appearance in this competition was in the 1982 edition, facing the Catalan giants Barcelona. The tie was played over two legs, and they triumphed 3-1 on aggregate to lift their first-ever title.

Since that feat, it has been 44 years without appearing at this tournament, with their return in what will be their second Super Cup appearance. There is one obstacle that could halt Villa’s dream return to this stage: their own head coach, Unai Emery. As much as he has a proven track record in European competitions, this is where he has failed to assert his dominance and meet expectations.
