Manchester United vs Aston Villa: Third Meets Fourth As They Battle For Top Four Control In The Premier League
by Thobelani Moyo | by Cydias Aujard
The Red Devils still have high hopes of finishing inside the top three
Manchester United have, without a doubt, evolved into a formidable outfit, embarking on an upward trajectory since the arrival of Michael Carrick in the dugout.
The former captain succeeds Ruben Amorim as interim manager, and it has been two months since his appointment. He has been in charge of eight games and, surprisingly enough, has delivered on expectations with six wins during that period.
This currently has the team chasing a return to the UEFA Champions League in the upcoming season for the first time since 2024. It was one of their main priorities rather than chasing silverware in the Premier League, which is out of their reach.
Mathematically, they are still in the race to clinch the league trophy with nine games remaining. They sit in third place with 51 points accumulated from 29 games and are 19 points adrift of the summit. However, with table-toppers Arsenal not easing up at all, reaching such a milestone could prove difficult.
The Red Devils' position in the top three remains unguaranteed. They are level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa but are higher thanks to a better goal difference. Only three points separate them from fifth and sixth-placed Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively. Given the competition gunning for a UEFA Champions League berth, it would be a disappointment if they fail to finish inside one of those spots.
The Old Trafford outfit were offered a lifeline in cementing their top-three position last time out against Newcastle United, but shot themselves in the foot. In enemy territory, three points were dropped in a slender 2-1 defeat. That was Carrick's first defeat as Manchester United manager.
Is Unai Emery running out of answers ahead of Villa's trip to Old Trafford?
Aston Villa's form in the Premier League has been cause for concern. Heading into MD30, they have gone three games without a win, including back-to-back defeats against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea.
That, in fact, is only the surface of a much bigger problem, as they've won just three of their last Premier League outings. The European stage has been their safe haven, going six matches unbeaten since their 2-1 away defeat to Go Ahead Eagles in the UEFA Europa League (league phase) on October 23, 2025.
Unai Emery's charges beat Lille 1-0 on the road in the first leg of the Round of 16 on a Thursday night. The Villans will want to build on that result and return to winning ways in the Premier League. That feat is achievable considering they won 2-1 against Manchester United in the reverse fixture, ending a six-match winless run.
Can Villa complete a league double over their opponents, or will they suffer their third straight defeat? Find out what our experts have to say in our Manchester United vs Aston Villa prediction for more insights into the game.
Aston Villa are seeking to complete a league double over Manchester United for the first time since the 1954-55 season.
On paper, history is not on their side in past meetings against this opponent, especially when playing on the road. Trips to Old Trafford have proven to be a stumbling block for them. In their last 37 visits to this venue, they've won twice, lost 28 and drawn seven.
Nothing much can be done by head coach Unai Emery, who has had his own fair share of struggles against Man United. He has faced this team 17 times with four different teams in his managerial career and has recorded just four wins (D4, L9). With his current team now, he has won two of the last eight matches (D1, L5).
Despite those struggles, Emery is aware of the importance of this fixture to his side in their bid to qualify for the upcoming UEFA Champions League next season.
Players to watch out for
Bryan Mbeumo has been quiet for some time now. Still, there's no denying that the Cameroonian international has been a lethal force for Manchester United this season, contributing 12 goals in his last 24 league games.
It must be pointed out that Mbeumo has contributed three goals in his last five league games. His technical ability and explosive pace make him a key player.
Morgan Rogers is another player to watch out for this Sunday. He has contributed significantly to Aston Villa's goals this season, netting eight times and providing five assists.
Rogers played a pivotal role in the team's win over Manchester United in the reverse fixture. He bagged a brace with John McGinn and Ollie Watkins, providing the assists. The 23-year-old midfielder will be out to exploit any lapses in United's defensive organisation.
