Despite the ongoing tension between Iran and the United States, the former will set foot in the Los Angeles Stadium to lock horns with New Zealand in the Group G opener. This is the third meeting between these two sides, and Team Melli has the upper hand against a side aiming to record their first-ever win in the World Cup finals.

Will Team Melli go one step better this time?

Iran are making their seventh appearance at the World Cup finals. This is also their fourth consecutive qualification after suffering elimination four years ago at Qatar, finishing third in Group B.

Making it in this year's global showpiece, they had an easy path to qualifying, winning their group - Group A - in the AFC qualifiers. Qualification was secured with just two games left to spare following a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in March 2025.

Team Melli have one objective in this year's tournament, and that's to progress beyond the group stages for the first time in their history. Another important aspect worth mentioning is their poor record at the World Cup finals, where they've managed just three wins in 18 fixtures.

Arriving in North America, Iran faces a host of off-pitch challenges stemming from its ongoing conflict with co-host nation USA, adding another layer of complexity to its quest for a historic knockout-stage appearance.

However, head coach Amir Ghalenoei, who is making his second stint for the senior national football team, will be hoping his side can block out the off-field noise and succeed. Ghalenoei has overseen 43 matches and has a 72% win rate, which should motivate him to navigate a group that includes Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.

Amir Ghalenoei's coaching record with Team Melli over two stints:

  • Matches: 43
  • Wins: 31
  • Draws: 6
  • Losses: 6

New Zealand's last appearance in the World Cup finals was in 2010 when they concluded the group stages with an unblemished record in three games. Still, that wasn't enough to see them progress to the knockout stages as they finished third in Group F with three points.

The All Whites are participating in this year's edition after conquering the Oceanian qualifiers. They finished at the top of Group B with a 100% record. They scored a whopping 19 goals and conceded just one, highlighting their offensive prowess and defensive solidity. Will this count as enough in their opening match against Iran? Let's find out what our experts have to say in our Iran vs New Zealand prediction.

With just two appearances at the World Cup finals, they've yet to win in any of their last six games, recording three draws and three losses and will be aiming to record their first-ever win. That'll prove to be a hurdle, considering they are the lowest-ranked nation in this year's tournament and are also the weakest side in Group G.

Darren Bazeley’s side are expected to cruise past Iran in their opening match in the World Cup finals, which will be another hurdle as they've gone two games without a win against this opponent. The last meeting resulted in a 3-0 defeat in 2003.

To make matters worse, their form offers little encouragement as they've won one of their last 11 games across all competitions. The sole victory came against Chile in March 2026 in the FIFA Series group stages.
