FA Cup fourth round key results and upsets

The fourth round of the FA Cup had few to little surprises, but all in all, it saw Premier League giants survive. Liverpool had no trouble advancing to the fifth round, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 at Anfield.

Manchester City had an easier assignment, eliminating League Two rivals Salford City. In front of their home crowd, the Citizens came out on top in a 2-0 victory. Arsenal thrashed Wigan Athletic 4-0 at home to advance to the next round, while Chelsea also had a mirror result against EFL Championship side Hull City.

Other Premier League teams that progressed to the next round of this competition are Newcastle United, West Ham United, Brentford, Leeds United, Wolves, Sunderland, and Fulham.

Big Upset:

Mansfield Town proved to be the giant killers in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Facing Premier League side Burnley, who are on the verge of relegation, piled more pressure on Scott Parker, whose days at Turf Moor are numbered.

The third-tier side secured a 2-1 away win. This marked their third and first win against this opponent since April 1985. Most importantly, they reached the fifth round for the first time since the 1974-75 season.

If you are talking about upsets, then Mansfield Town's success over Burnley has to be one of the most compelling stories to emerge from the competition.

Interesting matchups to watch out for in the fifth round

Newcastle United vs Manchester City

Newcastle United and Manchester City are set to clash for the fourth time this season. The latter already has Newcastle's number with two wins in their previous three meetings.

Their most recent outing was a 3-1 home victory for Pep Guardiola's men in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals. They advanced to the final after a 5-1 aggregate success. For the Magpies, this matchup could serve as a revenge mission.

Mansfield Town vs Arsenal

Another David vs Goliath clash is on the cards in the FA Cup, with giant-killers Mansfield Town taking on Premier League outfit Arsenal.

The third-tier side recently upset the odds against Burnley in the previous round and now faces another crack at a major scalp in the fifth round. However, Arsenal, 14-time FA Cup champions, will prove tough to beat.

Wrexham vs Chelsea

Wrexham are pushing for promotion in the EFL Championship, sitting in eighth place in the standings and one point behind the promotion playoff places. They face Chelsea, a club with a real silverware pedigree.

Chelsea have reached the fifth round in four of their last seven editions. The last time they achieved such an accomplishment was in the 2023-24 campaign after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the semi-final.
