The Three Lions return to action in June with a World Cup qualifying match against Andorra and an international friendly meeting with Senegal. Let’s break down Thomas Tuchel’s selections and take a deeper look into some of the surprise calls.

With the domestic season now wrapped up, attention turns towards the international stage with the 2026 World Cup now just one year away. Thomas Tuchel is looking to build on his 100% winning record with his third and fourth matches as England manager coming up. Below you’ll find additional information regarding the fixtures:

  • 7 June 2025: Andorra (A) - WCQ Group K, RCDE Stadium (Spain)
  • 10 June 2025: Senegal (H) - International Friendly, City Ground

Ivan Toney back in the fold

Starting at the front, here’s the attacking players that Thomas Tuchel has selected for England’s upcoming matches against Andorra and Senegal:

Forwards: Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, Ollie Watkins, Noni Madueke.

The big surprise among this list of players was the inclusion of Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney. The 29-year-old has been called up to the national team for the first time since the 2024 European Championship.

Toney has performed well since the move to Saudi Arabia, helping Al-Ahli lift the AFC Champions League for the first time in club history. Check out his seasonal stats below:

Elsewhere, Harry Kane is coming off his first trophy as a player after Bayern Munich reclaimed the Bundesliga title. Kane led the team in scoring once again with 38 goals, bringing his total to 82 goals in 91 appearances for the Bavarian giants since joining in August of 2023.

Foden opts to rest

Midfielders: Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers, Jordan Henderson, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White, Curtis Jones.

2023-24 PFA Player of the Year Phil Foden had a rough go of it this year as his Manchester City team ended the season trophyless for the first time since manager Pep Guardiola’s first season at the helm.

Foden saw a dramatic drop off in his numbers from his scintillating 2023-24 campaign, recording just 10 goals and two assists across 45 appearances compared to 27 goals and 12 assists last season. The 24-year-old has stated that he has had “a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally” and that it might be better to rest and come back fresh for next season.

Maguire left out in favor of Chalobah

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah celebrates

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Dan Burn, Ezri Konsa

Marc Guehi has been left out, but not because he has fallen out of favor. In fact, the Crystal Palace captain has proven to be one of England’s first choice centre backs over the last year when fit. Unfortunately for the Crystal Palace captain, he will have to miss out here after suffering an eye injury in his team’s FA Cup final win over Man City.

Somewhat surprisingly, England manager Thomas Tuchel opted to select Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah over Harry Maguire. The much-maligned former Manchester United captain was in the midst of a career revival in the 2024-25 campaign and has been a staple in the England team during many of their recent deep tournament runs.

Despite this, Tuchel told the media:

“At the moment, we see Trevoh (Chalobah) a little bit ahead of Harry (Maguire).”

Chalobah has put together a solid 2024-25 campaign. The 25-year-old played the first half of the season at Crystal Palace on loan before being recalled in January to cover for some of Chelsea’s injured defenders.

Crystal Palace were one of the Premier League’s very best teams from set pieces and Chalobah contributed to that with all three of his goals coming for the Eagles. He’s also proved to be particularly effective in the tackle and ranks highly in interceptions per game.

FA Cup star Henderson eyeing third cap

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, James Trafford

Fresh off his starring role in the 2025 FA Cup final, Dean Henderson will be hoping to parlay that momentum into his third England cap. The Crystal Palace shot stopper saved an Omar Marmoush spot kick in the first half and would go on to make a number of key saves later on to keep the Citizens out and help the Eagles win their first major trophy in club history.

Henderson made his Three Lions’ debut in 2020 and had to wait four years until his second appearance in October of 2024. Tuchel might look to reward the 28-year-old with a start in one of England’s two matches, with the friendly against Senegal the more realistic of the pair.
