6 games left. 5 teams competing for Champions League spots. And the 6th-placed Chelsea now desperately takes on Man United in 3rd for three points and a bid to finish in the top 5. Liam Rosenior’s perfect start could quickly turn to a bitter ending unless he can secure UCL football for the Blues next season. The question now is whether Chelsea can avoid back-to-back defeats against a red-hot United side.

Chelsea’s Bid for Champions League Football

For the reigning Club World Cup champions, it would only be unfitting if they fail to secure UCL football just one season after coming from the Conference League. In truth, that was the case under former coach Enzo Maresca, who kept the Blues consistently in the top 4.

However, a mid-season surge from both Aston Villa and Manchester United has displaced Chelsea all the way to 6th.

In fact, the Blues are just four points off Fulham in 12th position thanks to a run of only one win in their last seven league games.

However, the top 5 is still just three points beyond Chelsea, while Villa and United are just seven points above, with 18 points still to play for. If Chelsea can grab all three points against a top-5 competitor in Matchday 33, then their bid for Champions League football next season might not be too late.

Carrick’s Mission “Almost Complete”

Club legend and new coach Michael Carrick has almost entirely transformed a club that finished 15th last season and was desperately begging for stability under former manager Ruben Amorim this season.

Here are Manchester United’s stats since Carrick’s appointment:

  • Took Man United from 6th to 3rd.
  • Won 7 of 11 games for Man United since his arrival.
  • Beat Man City for the first time at Old Trafford since 2023.
  • Won four games in a row for the first time since February 2024.
  • Beat Arsenal, Man City, and Aston Villa (the top 3 at the time).

Carrick’s brilliant run has catapulted his failing club back to a world-class team that is now just six games away from securing Champions League football. However, they have a blue bridge to cross when they visit Stamford Bridge later today.

They’ll be travelling confident after winning the first encounter this season. But against a desperate Chelsea side in a stadium they’ve not tasted victory since 2020, this could be Carrick’s toughest test yet.

All Eyes on Bruno Fernandes

Both teams will be looking at one player today, and his name is Bruno Fernandes. He’s become sort of a boogeyman for Chelsea in this H2H over the recent years. It’s his goal that opened the show in United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford this season.

And that goal made it 4 for Bruno of the Red Devils’ last 12 against Chelsea, effectively scoring 33.3% of them since 2023.

Bruno is already United’s best player this season, and he enters this clash with 6 G/A in his last five games alone. Some of Bruno’s key stats:

  • Bruno has provided 17 assists this season (the most), and seven more than the next guy (Ryan Cherki).
  • On Goals + Assists, Bruno is second at 25 G/A this season, only behind Erling Haaland with 29.
  • Bruno has created the most big chances in the league this season (25).
  • Fernandes averages the highest key passes per game (3.7).
  • 11 goals and assists under Carrick alone in 10 games.

Unless Chelsea has a game plan for containing the Man United skipper, then we may be in for another Bruno masterclass against Chelsea.
